a haiku year                                                             John Bailey

Summer

black crow
droops on tin roof --
summer heat

calm evening
hunting swallows
stitch the sky

cedar shingles
dry -- curled
wet - flat

edging the path
wild flowers -
don't stray!

falling stars
sketch lines on dark sky
so straight! so short!

feather falls
wild cat dances
-- rainy afternoon

fine rose sprinkling
here, there --
a grasshopper leaps aside

garden bamboo
leaf here, leaf there --
calligraphic dancing

heron flies home
struggling
with heavy load

in orchard shadows
chicken whispers -
summer noon

in the dandelions
a kitten chases
so much time

in the old man's pocket
two toffees
a ball of string

leaf dapple
sun prisms
dancing

new garden
how clean! how neat!
old poet rests

no wind playing
long grass rests --
silent prairie

noon sun on floating log
in its shadows
frogs dream an evening song

on the dark stream
one coloured flash --
kingfisher hunting

on the roof
woodpigeons
complain of rain

calm sea
wind squalls
tread stepping-stone paths

shadowed adobe
silent crickets --
summer ending

shadowy room
through the open window
last sunlight plays on hazel

so hot!
dozing puppies
twitch

summer storm
wind chimes
dance in lightning

swooping swallow
fly vanishes
before reflection

two dragonflies
shadow dancing
reflect August sun
